|Black Dog Knights|
The Black Dog Knights(黒犬騎士団) led by Wyald were a band of criminals and rapists enlisted by the King of Midland to fight in the One Hundred Year War. Their ruthless behavior against civilians resulted in them being banished to a remote region of Midland.
Most of the members were ugly and fierce looking thugs. They dressed in armor much like Wyald's, with fur and skins interspersed with the metal plates. None were very notable except Wyald himself.
Apart from sheer strength, none whatsoever. The Black Dog Knights lacked military competence or strategy, having only their cruelty, barbarism, and fear of Wyald to push them in battle. They were easily destroyed by the Hawks with what little they had, but not before burning and pillaging a village, raping its women, and staking the inhabitants.
During Midland's One Hundred Year War with Chuder, the King enlisted able-bodied prisoners to be drafted. A monstrous man named Wyald, later revealed to be an Apostle, volunteered for service and won the right to lead the army of criminals after killing his only competition Barbo. The newly formed Black Dog Knights soon gained an infamous reputation for being the most cruel and barbarous army in all of Midland, committing numerous atrocities under Wyald's command before the King banished them to the outskirts of Midland.
When the Band of the Hawk rescued Griffith and defeated the Bākiraka, the King sent a messenger to the Black Dog Knights to kill the Hawks for him. Though motivated by fear and terror, most of the Black Dog Knights were utterly destroyed by the Band of the Hawk in multiple ambushes with the few that remained killed by Wyald, who is later mortally wounded by Guts and then finally killed by Nosferatu Zodd.
- Wyald (Leader)
- Ex-condemned criminals from Midland
- Their motto was: "Enjoyment and Excitement"
- They were considered the second most powerful army compared to the Band of the Hawks.
- The name "Black Dog Knights" is very notable. Set on the Band of the Hawks, in particular, Griffith, for the King's revenge, they were barbaric and thuggish, but powerful. Guts himself is strongly connoted with dogs, wolves, and hounds, particularly black ones, many times in the manga, and like Wyald and his men intended to kill Griffith brutally in revenge.
