"Makara" is episode 241 of the Berserk manga series.

Synopsis[]

Guts' party are terrified by the unearthly beast that is crawling toward them, but Schierke identifies that it, too, is a physical creature that is possessed by an Astral spirit, which in turn is being controlled by a magic user. Its massive size means that Schierke's bulwark will hardly affect it, and it's position is such that it is located between the group and the beach, meaning that the group are now trapped between the beast, or makara, and the cliff on the inland side of the beach.

Seeing no other options, Serpico jumps up toward the makara's head, intending to slash at it with his sylphs, but the beast releases a huge gush of water from its trunk at him. Serpico is saved from a hard landing by the sylphs in his cloak, which slow his descent. Schierke reaches out with her mind and locates the makara's master, who is on a boat at sea, and is thus unreachable by the group.

The makara swings its massive trunk and destroys the roof of the cabin, barely registering the resistance put up by the bulwark. The next person to advance on the makara is Guts, who appears disturbed. Schierke attempts to warn him not to approach it, but soon realizes that her words aren't reaching Guts, whose mind is slipping further and further to the influence of the Beast of Darkness. Guts almost effortlessly deflects an attack from the beast's trunk and then drives the Dragon Slayer through its eye, blinding it on its right side.

Guts dodges and attacks several times before a sudden mental lurch occurs, courtesy of the Beast's influence, which causes him to freeze. The makara takes the opportunity to land its first hard hit on Guts using its trunk, dealing a devastating blow and sending Guts crashing into the cliff face. Intending to save Guts, Isidro throws consecrated berries at the makara, which explode on impact. The makara turns its attention to the rest of the group.

HelmetComplete

The Beast of Darkness takes over Guts' mind.

Guts watches as the makara advances on his party. Forcing himself to move, Guts slowly rises from his sitting position against the cliff as the wolf-shaped helmet rises from behind his back and clamps down over his head, signifying the Beast of Darkness' now firm grasp on Guts' mind.

Now using the Berserker Armor's full power, Guts leaps onto the makara and drives the Dragon Slayer into its already-blinded eye. The beast raises one of its fins to crush Guts onto its head, but the Black Swordsman leaps high into the air, avoiding the impact. He lands horizontally on the cliff face and uses it to launch himself straight at the makara, managing to cleave off its trunk. However, the strain of this last attack has reopened the wound on Guts' chest, causing it to bleed profusely.

Schierke decides to take matters into her own hands, preparing herself to force Guts to retake control of his own mind.
